Summary
The highest degree an irreducible factor may have for its number of real roots to
be settled.
be settled.
Remarks
Up to three the sign of the discriminant is the whole answer. At four it is half
of it — a negative discriminant means exactly two real roots, and a positive one
means four or none — and the two auxiliary quantities of the standard criterion
decide between those. At five there is no such criterion, and there is no formula
for the roots either.
