Summary

expr written as a product of powers of irreducible polynomials
over Q, or false where it is not a polynomial in
x, where it is already irreducible, or where the machinery
declines.

Remarks

An irreducible polynomial is reported as a refusal rather than as a one-element
product: the caller asked for a factorisation and there is not one to give, and
answering with the input unchanged would have every caller test for that case.
