Derivative

 Method (no overloads)

Summary

The formal derivative. In characteristic p this is not degree-lowering by
one: the derivative of x^p is p x^(p-1), which is zero, and more
generally the derivative vanishes identically exactly on the polynomials in
x^p — which is why a zero derivative is evidence of a p-th power
rather than of a constant.
